Walter Smith on Walter Kirn

Friday, April 25th, 2014

They say you can never go back, but we think Walter Smith would beg to differ. He just finished shooting a portrait of author, Walter Kirn, who is currently touring for his new book “Blood Will Out.” However, this is not the first time they have shot together – the two met about 15 years ago when Smith was shooting Kirn for a piece in GQ.

As our Walter told us, he wasn’t completely satisfied with the shot he got of Kirn – the location just wasn’t right and he had a much different portrait style at the time. The final shot had irked him and had been on his mind off and on throughout the years ever since. When he heard that Kirn had a new book coming out, Smith decided to track him down on Facebook and see if Kirn might let him take his photo again while in NYC on his book tour. Serendipitously, Kirn was traveling to NYC the following week and Smith was able to get the portrait he’d been wanting for so many years.

We think both portraits look great, but we do love the more conversational portrait style that he captured the second time around. Great work, Walter!
